What is Gamba?
An app to meet people from the electronic music scene: parties, clubs and festivals. You set up a profile, go through the Discover deck and, when two profiles like each other, a chat opens. What sets it apart from other apps like it is that people and groups share the same deck.
Do I need an account? Is there a minimum age?
Yes, you need an account: you sign in with your email and a password, with Google, or with Apple if you are on an iPhone. The minimum age is 18. Your date of birth is entered only once, when you create your profile, and can't be changed afterwards — the age shown always comes from that date, so it keeps itself up to date.
What is a group profile?
A profile that represents several people —a crew, a band, a group of friends who go out together— instead of just one. It works like this:
·
One account, several profiles: you have your individual profile and as many groups as you want. You switch between them from the Profile tab, and what you do —likes, matches, parties— belongs to the profile you are acting as.
·
Members don't need an account: whoever sets up the group adds them by hand, with their name and age. If one of them has a Gamba account they can link it, and from then on their details come from their own profile.
·
A group doesn't use GPS: its location and distances come from the city it declared, not from where anyone's phone is.
How do I use Discover?
With your finger, on the card: swipe right if you are interested, left if not, and up to send a Super Like. Tapping the card opens the full profile, with all the photos and the rest of the information. Super Likes have a weekly limit, and it is the only choice the other person sees before deciding.
I passed on someone by mistake. Can I go back?
No. Once you decide on a profile, it won't show up for you again. That is on purpose: without it, the same people would keep going around the deck forever.
Can I see who liked me?
Regular likes are not shown. Super Likes are: when someone sends you one, their card reaches you marked and you see it before deciding. That is what makes spending a Super Like worth it.
When is there a match?
When you have both liked each other, in any order. It then shows up in the Matches tab and the chat opens. Nobody finds out about your like until the other person likes you too.
Nobody shows up in Discover
It is usually one of three things. Your preferences are too narrow —age, distance, or whether you want to see people, groups or both—, which you adjust from the Profile tab. You have already decided on every profile nearby. Or your profile is paused, and in that case Discover tells you so on screen.
How is distance calculated?
The server calculates it between your location and the other person's, but not between exact points: each location is first rounded to a cell of about 1.6 km, and the distance is measured between cells. That is what stops anyone from working out where you live by watching how the number changes as they move. That is why the smallest figure you will read is “1 km away”, never zero.
Does Gamba use my location when the app is closed?
No. There is no background tracking. Your location is updated when you come back to the app, and only if more than fifteen minutes have passed since the last time; the deck is reshuffled only if you moved about two kilometers. If you don't want Gamba to see your location, revoke it from your phone's settings; and if what you want is to stop appearing, what you are looking for is pausing your profile.
Where do the parties come from? Can I add one?
From two places: the ones we import and the ones people send. You see the ones in your country, sorted by date and, within the same day, by distance. Anyone can send one that is missing —the option appears in the Parties tab when you search for something that isn't there or reach the end of the list— and it stays pending review before it is published. You can follow the status of what you sent from Settings, in “My submissions”. A canceled party doesn't disappear: it is shown marked as canceled, so whoever had signed up finds out.
What is the verified check for?
It says the person took a selfie doing a pose we picked at random at that moment, and that the photo matches the ones on their profile. It is what tells a real profile apart from one built with someone else's photos. It is done from the app on your phone, because it needs the camera. A group has no check of its own: the check of each member who linked their account is shown.
How do I block or report someone?
Tap their card to open the full profile and you will find “Block and report” at the bottom; with a chat open, it is at the top. Blocking is immediate and mutual: you stop seeing each other. And it applies to your whole account, not just the profile you were acting as. If someone added you as a member of a group without your permission, there is a separate page to ask to be removed, and you don't need an account.
What does pausing my profile do?
You stop appearing to others in Discover and you don't see anyone either, but your matches and conversations stay intact. The profile you are acting as is paused, one at a time: pausing your individual profile doesn't pause your groups. It is in Settings, under Privacy and safety, and you resume from the same place.
How do I change my city?
From editing your profile, by searching for it by name. It can be changed once every thirty days: the city drives a good part of what you see, and moving it every day would make it useless. Keep in mind that the city you declare is not the same as your location — the first says where you live, the second comes from GPS.
How do I manage notifications?
The main switch is in Settings and only exists in the phone app. Inside, in “Which notifications to get”, you choose by type: matches, messages, message likes, Super Likes and parties. Those preferences belong to your account, not the device, so what you choose from the computer also applies to your phone.
How do I download my data or delete my account?
Both are in Settings. “Download my data” builds a file with everything we have stored about you. “Delete my account” permanently deletes your profile, your photos and your activity, and it can't be undone: your matches and conversations also disappear from the other person's account. If you no longer have the app or can't sign in, you can request deletion from the public account deletion page.
I didn't find my answer
Write to us at info@joingamba.com and we will get back to you. If something in the app isn't working, use “Report a problem” in Settings: it comes with the three questions we need to reproduce it, and that gets it solved much faster.
